Time Travel may be the stuff of science fiction, but it has been used in a variety of genres such as horror (recently Happy Death Day), comedy (Time Bandits / Groundhog Day), romantic comedy (About Time), and many more.  It is used either as the prime focus of the film, or as a deus-ex-machina (sometimes effectively, other times lazily) to set things right again by the end of the film.

In this week’s #MTOS we shall step into our TARDIS and look back at some of the aspects of time travel in films over the decades.  Whilst researching and considering questions for this topic, it became quite apparent that it could form the basis of multiple weeks of #MTOS as the concept has pervaded such a volume of films through the ages, and so don’t be surprised if we step into this portal again some time down the line.

Q1: Let’s start simple – what film (or films) which involves time travel is the one you return to…erm…time and time again?  What draws you to them?   #MTOS

Q2: Why do you think time travel is such a prominent plot device in so many films of every genre, not just sci-fi?  Are there any cross genre uses that spring to mind as great examples of its use? #MTOS

Q3: One of the most famous franchises which involves time travel is Terminator.  With a new film in production, is it time to re-evaluate the unappreciated films in the series, or are they best forgotten?   #MTOS

Q4 Do you prefer time travel tales that delve into the past, or are you a fan of ventures into the future?  #MTOS

Q5: Which film, in your opinion, has the best depiction of time travel as a plot device, and why? Not necessarily your favourite time travel film, but one which uses the concept most effectively. #MTOS

Q6: The concept of time travel was popularised via HG Wells’ ‘The Time Machine’ which has been adapted into 3 films (1960, 1978 and 2002 – ignoring the teledrama).  Out of the three, which have you seen, and do you rate them highly or poorly?   #MTOS

Q7: Continuity errors and paradoxical events are inevitable in even the best time travel films.  Some you can overlook, but what examples spring to mind where the error cripples the film? #MTOS

Q8: Groundhog Day takes the concept of time travel, but never attempts to explain why poor Phil is stuck in his loop.  Does the lack of explanation bother you, or is it better that it is never explained? #MTOS

Q9: Star Trek has used time travel many times, including a few times in their big screen outings (Voyage Home, Generations, First Contact, Star Trek).  Which is your favourite of them and why? #MTOS

Q10: If you could go back in time to change the production for any one film about time travel, which film would you change, and what changes would you make?  #MTOS
