#MTOS Presents: Animated Adventure

#MTOS Presents: Animated Adventure post thumbnail image

I love animations.  Be they short, long, CGI, painted, cell-shaded, stop-motion, whatever – I love how creative they can be, how they can tell heartfelt tales which seem more real than reality, and how there genuinely are no boundaries except the imagination.

That said, I’ve also suffered through some terrible, terrible animated movies through the years, none worse than those which had so much potential and promise.

This week’s #MTOS dips our toes into the water of Animated Adventure, predominately looking at the works of Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar, but with a couple of questions at the end to touch on the farther reaches of animated movies.  You see, whilst coming up with this week’s topic, I really wanted to dig down into every aspect of animation, but quickly realised that 10 questions would never work, so I trimmed out some aspects that can be better explored in their own topic (stop-motion is one such topic, and anime deserves someone more well versed in it to come up with questions).

Sticking to the most well known studios was a deliberate choice  – everyone has something to say, good or bad, about the three, so consider this Part One of an animated topic, which we will return to at a future date.

In the meantime, join us this coming Sunday 19th August at 8pm UK time as we reflect on the good, the bad, and the sketchy of animated features.

Q1: You can’t talk about animation without mentioning Disney, so let’s kick off with a few questions on the House of Mouse (ignoring Pixar for now).  To begin, which is your most beloved of the Disney animated features?  Maybe you have a few favourites?  Why? #MTOS

Q2: Disney have been known to make some stinkers too, so which films missed the mark from the studio?  What do you think went wrong?  #MTOS

Q3: With the studio on a path of remaking all their beloved animations as live-action outings, which of their back catalogue would you like them to give the live treatment, and which should they leave as it is?  #MTOS

Q4 Clamouring to follow Disney, Dreamworks made a nice mark in the market during a period when Disney seemed to have lost that sparkle.  Again, which Dreamworks films are your favourite, and which are best left gathering dust? #MTOS

Q5: Pixar are, perhaps, the most beloved of the modern studios (and with good reason).  What is their top three films in your opinion, and what makes them so enticingly magical?  #MTOS

Q6: Initially known for avoiding sequels (Toy Story aside), recent years have seen them delve into their back catalogue to bring second or third films out.  Did those films deserve sequels?  Did the end result justify the revisit? #MTOS

Q7: Are there any Pixar films that should have stayed on the ‘concept’ table a bit longer, or just scrapped from the start?  Are there any which are loved by majority, but you really don’t get the love for? #MTOS

Q8: You can’t mention Pixar without mentioning their shorts.  They started a trend when they tagged their features with some of their short films.  Which have been your favourites through the years?  #MTOS

Q9: Before we wind up, a quick question on anime (this deserves a topic to itself at some point, but we can’t talk animation without mentioning it).  What anime film is the one you recommend to someone approaching anime for the first time?  Why? #MTOS

Q10: Finally, this is a chance to mention any animated movie from a studio not covered above.  What three animated films, from any studio, would you recommend everyone to check out?

Time to add more films to those watch-lists people! #MTOS

See you there.
