Plot: When pilot Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger lands his damaged plane on the Hudson River in order to save the flight's passengers and crew, some consider him a hero while others think he was reckless.

Whilst there is no arguing that the real life events of January 15th 2009, as Captain Chesley Sullenberger landed a plane in the Hudson and by doing so ensured the survival of all the 155 passengers and crew, whether the events and the investigation that followed are worthy of a feature length movie is debatable.  Despite the poster tagline that claims this is “the untold story” (if you ignore the telling on news and investigation TV shows and dramatisations), the events are well known, and the investigation that followed has been thoroughly covered, leaving not much of the story to actually tell.  So, what, exactly, does a film bring to the table?

It brings moustaches…very big moustaches!

Well, for a start it brings star performances by Tom Hanks as Sully, Aaron Eckhart as his first officer, Jeff, and a strong cast of supporting characters played by names such as Laura Linney, Anna Gunn, Ann Cusack, and Mike O’Malley.  It also brings the expected strong directorial style, and focus on character that you would expect from a Clint Eastwood film.  In addition it contains jaw dropping visual elements as we see the landing, and also some images of crashes that could have happened.

However, what it doesn’t give us is anything really deserving of a feature film.  Those aforementioned effects we see in the representation of the plane landing?  Yeah, we see them quite a few times, and repeatedly drawn out each time, as though we hadn’t actually seen it before.  Yes, this allows us to see a few different viewpoints, but they do seem like unnecessary padding when all the sequences could have been edited into one segment, rather than being used sporadically to repeat those events we already know.  The moments when the film does get interesting are when we glimpse flashbacks to Sully’s early life as a pilot, but these are teasingly short glimpses into what looked like the more interesting story of how this man became so confident in his ability that he took the brave choice to land on water.

Weighed down by such huge moustaches, the plane had to make an emergency landing in the Hudson

The investigation scenes which make up most of the film never feel much more than a distraction, whilst the post-traumatic nightmares and visions that Sully is suffering from in the aftermath of the events feel a little tacked on just to throw in some more visual moments (guaranteed to look great on your IMAX screen, folks).  Whilst, in the end, the whole thing has a feel of one of those TV movie of the week dramas ‘based on a true story’.  Heck, various crash investigation programs have already dramatized the events and investigation in under an hour.

Yes, Sully is well made, and well acted, with a good musical score and strong visual elements….but it just feel a bit, well, unnecessary and forgettable in the end.  No doubt, due to the ‘all American hero’ aspect it will do well come award season, but whether it deserves to do so remains questionable in my mind.
