#MTOS : Zucker Abrahams Zucker (ZAZ)

#MTOS : Zucker Abrahams Zucker (ZAZ) post thumbnail image

I actually didn’t intend for this week to be about Zucker Abrahams and Zucker films (ZAZ) at first.  I’ve actually got half the questions typed out for a ‘Buddy Cops’ topic (watch for that in the next couple of weeks).  However, whilst coming up with them, I got to thinking about the comedy aspect of those films, then started writing some questions about comedy films (watch for that general topic at some point), before realising I’d used 3 of the 6 questions I’d jotted down to chat about ZAZ films.  So, I spun off from that idea to look specifically at ZAZ.

Well known for their comedies with exclamation marks (Airplane!, Hot Shots!, Top Secret!, Naked Gun!), the trio have individually also tackled a scattering of other films, including a couple not easily identifiable as part of their output.  Pretty much everyone I’ve ever spoken to has at least one of their films in their regular ‘go-to’ film for one reason or another (for me, it is Airplane! – if I need a laugh, that’s my first port of call…in fact, I’m going to watch it as soon as I’ve finished typing this up).  But is everything they have released good, or are there some stinkers?  This is what we shall attempt to cover this Sunday evening (or afternoon, or morning – hey, I don’t know where you are in the world) at 8pm UK time on Twitter.  To join in, just look for the #MTOS, or follow @filmfileuk and get answering.

Here’s the questions, so you can prepare….

Q1: The filmography for Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker only includes 3 which they all co-directed on – Airplane!, Top Secret! And Ruthless People (along with the TV series Police Squad!).  Of those co-directing gigs, which do you enjoy the most? #MTOS

Q2: Each of the trio has tackled solo outings over the years.  Starting with David Zucker, which is your favourite, and which is your least?  Why?
(Naked Gun, Naked Gun 2 ½, For Goodness Sake, BASEketball, My Boss’ Daughter, Scary Movie 3 & 4, An American Carol) #MTOS

Q3: Now the other Zuzcker, Jerry… Favourite and least favourite?
(Ghost, First Knight, Rat Race) #MTOS

Q4 Finally JIm Abrahams.  Best solo film, worst solo film?
(Welcome Home Roxy Carmichael, Hot Shots, Hot Shots Part Deux, …First Do No Harm, Mafia!) #MTOS

Q5: Regular collaborators in roles in the films are many.  Who are your top three recurring actors from ZAZ films?  What made them stand out? #MTOS

Q6: Modern spoof movies (such as those directed by Friedberg and Seltzer) have tried to emulate the ZAZ style of slapstick farce.  Do you think they got anything right, or should we disregard the modern spoof genre? #MTOS

Q7: David Zucker took the reins on Scary Movie 3 and 4, bringing Leslie Nielsen along with him.   Did they manage to bring their old magic to the franchise, or should it have been left alone?   #MTOS

Q8: Back in 2013, Ed Helms was cast for a reboot of Naked Gun which never came to fruition.   Last year, David Zucker announced a forth film is being written, focussing on Drebin’s son.  Good idea?  Bad idea?  #MTOS

Q9: Pat Proft has been a frequent collaborator with ZAZ (maybe it should be PZAZ), co-writing Naked Gun, Hot Shots, and Scary Movie films.  What films which were written by him do you enjoy the most  – not necessarily ZAZ films?  Did ZAZ benefit from his input?  #MTOS

Q10: As the last two questions attest, it is inevitable that ZAZ films will see some form of reboot.  Which would you be least averse to, and who would you cast?  Which should be left alone?  #MTOS
