#MTOS presents: The Andersons

#MTOS presents: The Andersons post thumbnail image

At one point or another in my life, I have seen that an Anderson is working on a film, and I’ve had to focus to ensure it is the right Anderson I’m thinking of.  The result of such moments forms the basis of question ten in this week’s #MTOS, and is a question I like to have fun with from time to time, concocting ideas of how each director would approach one of the other director’s works.  So, this week we look, overall, at the work of The Andersons.

Now each of these could probably have been split into their own topic, spending 10 questions delving into their works, but:-

a) I’m not certain, but I think one or two have been done before, and if I’m going to repeat old ideas I want to flip them in a different way

and

b) I thought it would be more fun to play on the comparing of the three.

The three Andersons (which sounds like a fairy tale in which a little girl finds a well framed, pastel shaded house in a forest, only to find a bunch of depressed zombies contemplating their existence inside…..in 3D) all offer very different cinematic experiences.  For those who are not sure, here’s a brief idea of their works:-

Wes Anderson – from films such as Rushmore, Life Aquatic, Grand Budapest Hotel, Isle of Dogs, and more, his unique quirky flair is instantly recognisable.

Paul Thomas Anderson – Boogie Nights and Magnolia started him off, and films such as There Will Be Blood, The Master, and Phantom Thread keep him held in high regard by critics.

Paul WS Anderson – Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, Death Race.  Yup, a very different animal than the other two, but with films such as Shopping and Event Horizon early in his career, he showed he isn’t just daft action and zombies in 3D

Love them or hate them, let’s discuss them in #MTOS this coming Sunday 29th July 2018 at 8pm UK time.

Q1: Amongst the works of Wes Anderson, which are your favourites and why?  Are there any you dislike?   #MTOS

Q2: Wes Anderson’s films are known for a certain style of framing and colour palette.  Do you find his signature style enticing, or do you get frustrated by it, felling it is quirky for the sake of being quirky? #MTOS

Q3:  Wes also works repeatedly with the same actors.  Which of his usual cohorts do you believe work best in his films, and why?  Are there any additions to his ever-expanding casts that didn’t fit into the proceedings?   #MTOS

Q4: Wes’ films also are known for their excellent soundtracks.  Which use of music from his films stood out the most as a great placement of a track to visuals?  Why?  #MTOS

Q5: Which of PT Anderson’s films do you embrace the most?  Any which you dislike? #MTOS

Q6: In contrast to the somewhat whimsy of Wes, Paul Thomas Anderson films tend to offer a darker look at life. Are there any of his films that just felt too deep into darkness that it put you off?  #MTOS

Q7: Paul Thomas has worked with a diverse range of cast, including some surprise names in very different roles to their usual output.  Which collaborator on a Paul Thomas Anderson film surprised you the most?  #MTOS

Q8: Paul WS Anderson is maybe a little less…erm…appreciated than the other two, but do you feel the hate levied at him is justified?  Are there any of his films you find yourself returning to again and again?   #MTOS

Q9: After directing the first Resident Evil film, Paul WS stepped back for a couple of films to just produce.  He returned to direct from the 4th film onward.  Should he have stayed as producer, or did his return serve the films well? #MTOS

Q10: If each Anderson were to remake another Anderson’s films, which ones would be creative genius and why?  Which would be hilarious?  At least one remake per director please.  Have fun with this one.  #MTOS

As always, #MTOS would not exist now if not for the great work of the founders,  &

As always, a big thank you to both of them.
