As we enter week three of the reboot of #MTOS, with word slowly spreading of my attempts to bring it back, the question remains – why this and why now?
Now, in the first post about the reboot I covered the technical reasons – improvement in Twitter to allow chained posts, more characters per post, embedded quotes, etc make it a perfect medium for the chat to take place in. But that doesn’t really explain why I took it upon myself to bring it back.
It all started about a month and a half ago. Quite simply fed up with always seeing the hatred in this world everytime I log onto Twitter, with nary a day going by without Trump, Brexit, and more recently the whole #FreeARacistTurkeyWhoDefiedACourtOrder(akaTommy), Twitter had become quite a depressing place to visit. It made me think back to things like #MTOS and #TVTOS, and the thrill of looking forward to some fun each week, if only for a couple of hours. A random tweet remembering the hashtag led to a few folk saying I should give it a shot to bring it back.
Initially I laughed it off, but then started to think. My website had not found any momentum in a while, and I had kind of lost my drive. Perhaps something like this would inspire me once more. So, I planned a one-off #MTOS special, based around Remakes and Reboots.
It was during the writing of the questions that I started to get a few ideas for other topics to quiz the film fans about, and so it was that half way through the first week, whilst I was sat on a bus home from work frantically trying to answer and engage with the replies being sent out, that I realised I was loving it and wanted to keep going.

Week two was a joy to plan for, and I already knew I wanted to do week three even before I published the questions for week two. At this point I have every intention of trying to keep this going – I am inspired again, and it has been great to see the old gang starting to discover the hashtag has come back.
So, for that couple of hours every Sunday, we can forget that the US President is a crazy person, we can stop worrying that the UK economy is set to crumble, and we can stop trying to educate gammons. Instead, we can just answer some questions around films, respecting each other’s opinions as we do, and come together as a community.
As a side note, it is great to see that the founders of the original #MTOS are showing support for my reboot, and I hope I’m doing them proud. I did contemplate renaming it to #FFTOS (FilmFile Talk On Sunday), but realised that sounded like a wet fart being emitted.
