#MTOS: The Cold Art of Filmmaking

There’s quite a lot of films set in cold, snow-filled environments.  Some are set at Christmas, some not, but snowy landscapes are a common site on film.  A few filmmakers return to the snowy setting from time to time, whilst others utilise it to brilliant effect in one standout film.

For this week’s wintery themed round of questions, I wanted to do another week where most people will be able to submit something, and so picked out a handful of filmmakers who have delivered quite well known ‘snowy’ films, with the idea being to look at the best and worst each has to offer from their whole film CV.  The final two questions will cover just films set in a wintery landscape.

So, join us this Sunday at 8pm as #MTOS looks at Tim Burton (Nightmare Before Christmas, Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands), Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3), Stanley Kubrick (The Shining), and The Coen Brothers (Fargo) and asks, what are their best and worst films?

Q1: Starting with Tim Burton –  Three films which you would recommend to someone who has never seen his work.  What makes them such a recommendation?    #MTOS

Q2: Now, how about three utter stinkers from Burton?  What makes them so terrible? #MTOS

Q3: Shane Black – known for writing and directing, and having Christmas as a backdrop quite frequently.  Which three films has he worked on that you would recommend, and why? #MTOS

Q4: Has Shane Black been involved in making some bad choices?  Can you think of three films which he worked on that need removing from his CV? #MTOS

Q8: Now Kubrick’s three weakest films.  What didn’t work for you? #MTOS

Q9: So, with the filmmakers out the way, let’s start to wind things up a bit.  What films set either at winter, or in snowy environments, do you find yourself returning to again and again?   #MTOS

Q10: Can you think of any iconic moment in a snowy film that just made you go, “Wow!”  Maybe it was a whole scene, or a simple shot, but a moment which just blew you away.  Was the setting important, or could it have worked equally well in a hot climate? #MTOS
