Disclaimer: I was never a big fan of the first film. I know it is much loved by a number of folk, but the majority of those folk were kids when it released, and so have that nostalgic memory of the film that childhood movies tend to be glazed with. I was an adult when it released, and it was average at best. So I approached this film with low expectations.
So, that aside, if I say that this film makes the first film look like a much better film on reflection, that should convey how I feel with this one.
The first problem is that, once again, we have a film that thinks it is being cleverly meta with a gag (see Fast 9 for how this irks me) with a scene in which Lebron James is pitched the idea of adding him to a wealth of WB materials, and him turning it down saying he is a sports star not an actor, and nobody wants to see him in a film (hahaha…see, they are excusing his bad acting in this film by way of a meta joke….isn’t that clever?). My issue here is that not only is this droll attempt at humour not funny, but it is simply lazy writing to cover up a film’s failings. Don’t get me wrong, a meta dig at yourself can work (see the Jump Street films for example), but not when it is seemingly added to try to draw away criticism by making clear how the filmmakers know the film has problems (see the Ghostbusters reboot film scene of them reading ‘criticisms’ of them online….hohoho!)

Attempting to shoehorn every WB franchise ever, the result is a film that teases how it could have been really clever with some ‘movie world crossover segments’ but instead gives us a Matrix opening parody two decades late, a Casablanca scene that has no relevance to anything, and other such ‘blink and you will miss them’ moments. In addition, let’s be honest, the film plays young (and indeed, kids are loving it), but the myriad of references are playing old, to an audience who will disengage from the rest of the film because of how bland it all is.
By the time the Loony Tunes are given an unnecessary 3D rendered makeover for the final act, I was already pretty much past caring about the outcome of the basketball game, or whether Lebron would reconcile with his son.
Forget dribbling up the court, this film is drivel up the court!
