Well, this definitely came as a surprise.   I saw this drop on Sky Movies and sneered, expecting to not be enamoured.  Kristen Wiig’s name intrigued me enough to give it a shot, and within the first few minutes I was belly-laughing out loud!

Barb and Star are middle aged friends who lead very plain lives.  Apprehensive about trying something new, they hesitantly take a holiday to Vista Del Mar, and there they find fun, love, and a secret plot by a Bond-style villain to destroy the resort with mutant mosquitos!   Oh, and a talking crab.

Seriously, this film is an absolute blast!  Ridiculously hilarious, with intermittent musical moments of hilarity infused lyrics, the idea is silly, the cast are having a laugh, and the whole thing is a joy to view.  From small lines of dialogue that are packed with ridiculous nonsense (“a person’s face can tell you a lot about how they look”) to crazy backstories (the villain backstory just keeps delivering more and more to ridiculous levels).  This is a film that will definitely hold up to revisits as I missed so much through laughing.

Wiig and co-star and writer Annie Murmolo are just the right side of annoying as Barb and Star – enough high pitched and babbling to make you irritated, but also enough heart to make you care for them.  Jamie Dornan as the henchman turned love interest is a comic revelation!  Wiig also gets to have fun as the villain in a second role as Sharon Fisherman, and relishes the moments.

This is an absolute treat of a film.
