Plot: A circle of teenage friends accidentally encounter the ancient evil responsible for a series of brutal murders that have plagued their town for over 300 years. Welcome to Shadyside.

Another film that I expected nothing from, but got a thrill with.  Fear Street is a trilogy of films drawn from the books by RL Stine, and are being released over a three week period on Netflix.

A town called Shadyside has a history of serial killers, and the film opens with a new outbreak as a bookstore employee is hunted down and slain in a mall late one night, alongside other mall employees.  Meanwhile, neighbouring town Sunnyvale is one of the richest and safest towns in the country – many Shadyside teens theorising that this is all because of a witch known as Sarah Frier who was persecuted in 1666 and cursed the town.

The film then follows trope after trope of the slasher horror genre, paying homage to some of the best of the bunch, but in a good, and immensely fun way!  From the Blair Witch-esque curse, to Scream, halloween, and more.  As we follow these teens as they seek to find a way to break the curse which is placed on one of them, there are scares, frights, and bloody effects to keep the pacing going.

By the end, with a little sequel baiting tease of the next film, I was clamouring for more – and the next film will flashback to the summer camp massacres of 1978 (cough cough Friday 13th), before the third film will go back to the start of it all….the witch trials of 1666.  I’m definitely going to be watching these each week as they drop.
