Mystery Men

Loosely based on the superhero parody comic book Flaming Carrot, Mystery Men uses a few characters from that comic, throws in a few new ones, and lovingly mocks the genre.  The setting is Champion City, where a ragtag trio of wannabe heroes, The Shoveler (Willaim H Macy), Mr Furious (Ben Stiller) and The Blue Raja (Hank Azaria) are attempting to be recognised for their deeds.  However, the city has a real hero in the guise of Captain Amazing (Greg Kinnear) who always manages to steal their thunder.  However, Captain Amazing is so good that he has more or less wiped out crime throughout the city, and is starting to lose attention (and sponsorship deals).  However, when his arch enemy Cassanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush) is released from incarceration, the city is under threat again…and Captain Amazing has mysteriously vanished.  The three unlikely heroes recruit a few others to assist in saving the city.  But The Spleen (Paul Reubens), the Invisible Boy (Kel Mitchell) and The Bowler (Jeanne Garofalo) are also not the most effective of heroes, and the team just can’t get along.

On its release in 1999, Mystery Men received above average reviews, but failed to find an audience, resulting in a box office bomb that didn’t even recover half of the budget in its initial run.  However it did manage to grow a cult audience over time, and has stood the test of time well.  Fifteen years have passed since it was released, yet it still looks as fresh, and entertains as well as it did then.  With the prevalence of comic book movies on the big screen these days the loving manner in which some of the tropes of the genre are mocked is perhaps more likely to resonate with audiences who may not have got the references in the past.  From the manner in which the suggestion that Captain Amazing and billionaire Lance Hunt are the same person (“Lance Hunt wears glasses. Captain Amazing doesn’t wear glasses.” – “He takes them off when he transforms.” –Getting levitra 40mg click to find out enough sleep.Sleep plays a vital role in production of many essential hormones Infertility. Not your typical Superhero team.

The cast already mentioned are all great, with William H Macy on excellent form in particular, but even the support cast have moments to stand out, especially Eddie Izzard as Tony P, the leader of the Disco Boys.  Tom Waits pops up as Dr Heller, a crazed inventor who approaches the team to work with them on some ideas, and Wes Studi is the mysterious Sphinx, talking in riddles as he trains the team Yoda-style. Heck, even Michael Bay manages to raise a smile as the leader of the Frat boys, one of the many inept henchman groups that Cassanova recruits to his evil cause.  But Greg Kinnear and Geoffrey Rush really stand out as Cassanova and Amazing, with the interplay between the pair sizzling with comic energy on screen.

Mystery Men is a joyous parody of the Superhero genre, and had it been released today would have likely received the welcome it deserves. If you’ve never seen it, I wholeheartedly recommend tracking it down and checking it out – if you’ve already seen it, why not revisit it again.
