#MTOS Presents: Spielberg on Film

#MTOS Presents: Spielberg on Film post thumbnail image

The problem with covering a director like Spielberg is that you not only have such a huge library of films to consider, but he is a director who refuses to be catagorised.

“Oh, he’s the CGI blockbuster film guy!”

You mean like Schindler’s List and Amistad?

“Oh, well, he’s the guy who does serious war films and historical epics then!”

Like Ready Player One and ET?

“Well, he’s never done comedy!”

What about 1941….oh, scrap that.  Yeah, I’ll take that – aside from his wry humour he injects into a lot of his films.

So, seemingly versatile in range, and able to deflect any criticism for his weaker films with ease by way of following with a striking release showing off what he can actually deliver.   Where do you start, and where do you go when discussing Spielberg.

Well, after a lot of consideration, I finally came up with ten questions which will hopefully spark some great discussion around the work, influences, failures, and surprises that Spielberg delivered to film.

Join us this Sunday 9th September at 8pm UK time on Twitter as #MTOS looks at the works of Spielberg.

Q1: If you were to pick three films from his back catalogue, which films would you say showcase the range of tales that Spielberg has told?  What makes them stand out? (Yeah, tricky first question – try narrowing down to three!) #MTOS

Q2: We covered the Jaws legacy last week, but what other legacies of cinema do you think Spielberg has been responsible for bringing to the world (or bringing back)? #MTOS

Q3: After Kubrick sadly passed away, Spielberg took the plans for AI Artificial Intelligence and chose to bring the story to the screen.  Are you a fan of the released film, and does it feel like a Kubrick film, or is the end result pure Spielberg?  #MTOS

Q4: Poltergeist was directed by Tobe Hooper, but many reports say that Spielberg was the controlling presence on set.  In the end result, which director’s vision is more prominent, and does the film work better because of the cross-vision, or despite it?   #MTOS

Q5: Are there any of his films that you feel are under-appreciated by the mass public and/or critics?  What makes you enjoy it more than the general consensus? #MTOS

Q6: Initially known for his blockbuster and fantasy/sci-fi output, the late 80s and early 90s saw Spielberg focus on a lot of more serio9us projects.  Which of his serious films do you admire the most, and which do you think are often overlooked? #MTOS

Q7: Spielberg has a few actors across his films that he has directed multiple times.  Who, out of the recurring faces, seems to embody the essence of Spielberg the most, and why? #MTOS

Q8: His producer credits far outnumber his director credits, and contain a huge number of beloved films.  Which films he produced do you have a particular fondness for and why?  #MTOS

Q9:  Is anyone still excited for another Indiana Jones film?  Did you enjoy Crystal Skull?  What (if any) are the film’s failings or strengths?  #MTOS

Q10: Finally, related to the previous question, which of his past films (director or producer) do you think is ripe for further tales to be drawn from (personally I’m waiting for 1942…but that’s just me).  Are there any of his visions that you want to return to?  #MTOS
