#MTOS: Reboots and Remakes

#MTOS: Reboots and Remakes post thumbnail image

A few years ago, every Sunday evening was taken up by ten questions revolving around film.  Using Twitter as the medium, #MTOS (Movie Talk On Sunday) was quite a thing, and resulted in a lot of discussion and debate.  Each week a new topic was put forward by someone, with many film bloggers and writers submitting their own themes and questions for all to discuss.

Then, around 2 years ago, #MTOS went quiet, taking a break.

A discussion a few weeks back sparked the idea to ‘soft-relaunch’ the fun, and fingers pointed at me to do something about it (after all, I suggested it).  So, here we are….and the topic is quite apt.

Reboots, Remakes and Relaunches

With the advances in Twitter over the past couple of years, from chained tweets, longer tweets, embedded gifs, retweet box-out quotes, the time seems ripe for a reboot (or is it a remake?)

I have my opinions on such things, and can often be found debating the pros and cons of them online.  But, I want to know what you all think.  So, this Sunday 24th June 2018, #MTOS gets a reboot on Twitter.  I will be posting out the following questions from 8pm BST, with one question every ten minutes.  Simply follow @filmfileuk or the #MTOS tag and answer back (remembering to tag the answer) to get involved.

Here’s the questions – so you can do some thinking before the day.

Q1: Reboots or remakes – what is the difference?

Q2: Hollywood has run out of ideas – a comment found whenever a new adaptation of an old product is announced.  But is this the case?

Q3: Okay, an easy one, and one which I anticipate some familiar answers in – what are your favourite remakes of all time?

Q4: If we accept that remakes or reboots are a staple part of the industry, would you prefer that old successes or old failures are given the treatment?

Q5: Remakes of foreign films get a bit of flak from some quarters, with the comment of, “You should watch it in the original language!” being bandied around.  But are there any examples of a remake of a foreign language film that has surpassed the original?

Q6: Following on from Q5, would you prefer a foreign language adaptation to directly adapt the source, or take the concept and present a different story but with nods to the original?

Q7: It is argued that you should never compare a remake with the original, but should judge it on its own merits, however many of them put nods and references to the original for the fans.  What examples can you think of where these little winks have worked against the film?

Q8: Any guilty pleasures amongst the remakes?  Has there been a remake that was lambasted by the majority, but which you would admit to being a fan of, or even champion the cause of?

Q9: What factors should be considered before a remake or reboot is attempted?

Q10: Of course, we can’t end without the obligatory question of what old film or franchise would you argue is ripe for a reboot or remake right now?  Why is now the right time?

Special mention and thanks to #MTOS founders @raghavmodi & @askimrach for introducing the concept to the world all those years ago.
