Plot: The origins of Sarah Fier's curse are finally revealed as history comes full circle on a night that changes the lives of Shadysiders forever.

And so we get to 1666, as the Fear Street analysis of how myths and legends morph through retelling over time comes to a close.   As seen at the end of the second film, Deena is shown visions of Sarah Fier’s life in 1666, and there this film picks up as we see the events that led to her being accused of witchcraft.   In the settlement of Union, that preceded Shadyside and Sunnydale, Sarah and Hannah have a secret love, but after the pair get intimate (seen by Mad Thomas), the town begins to suffer misfortune, culminating in the Pastor murdering the children of the community in a bizarre ritual.   When Mad Thomas reveals what he saw, the two girls are accused of witchcraft and must fight to survive as the town works against them.

However, as we have come to realise in the previous films, not everything is as it seems, and these curses and tales are distorted through misinformation.

This third film plays into the pagan witchcraft genre of horror well, and once more some well worn tropes are rolled out.  But once again, the film plays to surprise and unbalance with revelations, altering perceptions now we know the truth behind the curse that has affected the future set films.  The last act of the film jumps us back to 1994, and picks up the tail end of the curse as the new insight into the origins is found, and a way to break the curse is revealed.

Important to note that whilst the Sarah Fier aspect of this film could easily be seen as a standalone film, as a whole this is not a film that you can watch without having viewed the previous pair (and why would you?)  As a final chapter to the trilogy it wraps up the loose threads well, and actually serves to be the strongest of the three chapters.

I’ve enjoyed this trilogy approach, and the backwards manner of telling – allowing us to uncover actual truths that were distorted through chinese-whisper-styled retellings of the curse over the years in the same way the kids in 1994 discover them piece by piece.  A sharp way to deliver an otherwise generic horror series.
