Bingo Hell is a first time feature from Gigi Saul Guerrero, who has previously demonstrated her horror chops in short segments in films such as ABCs of death 2.5 and Bloody Bits.  It is another in the series of From The Blumhouse horror collaboration between Amazon and Blumhouse, and as the first out the gate for this second run, it is sadly somewhat underwhelming.

Set in the Barrio of Oak Springs, where a group of stubborn (and somewhat eccentric) elderly characters reside, gentrification has threatened but never been able to take hold of the community.  The kind of leader of the community is Lupita, whose strong mind keeps the others in check.   But when the society’s beloved bingo hall comes under new ownership, with the prizes changing from ‘a free haircut’ and other such trivial items to thousands of dollars, she suspects the new owner is up to something sinister…

Bingo Hell is an interesting concept, poorly executed.  The social commentary of gentrification on communities is a good foundation, and having it literally be about throwing money at people to convince them you are their friend (in here, via the overly charismatic new Bingo hall owner played to scenery chewing effect by Richard Brake) whilst destroying their lives and pushing them to their death could have really worked well.  But sadly, it is hammered home too bluntly, whilst the film struggles around it to decide if it is a serious horror, or a quirky one.

The direction seems off-kilter to the dramatic tone, and it tries to walk the divide of surreality and seriousness, but fails entirely as it falls to one side or the other unevenly throughout.  Horror wise, fans of splat and gore will be more than happy, and Guerrero certainly knows how to hit with maximum effect.  But the storytelling lets the whole affair down, and her transition from short director to feature is not a good success.
