Plot: Supervillains Harley Quinn, Bloodsport, Peacemaker, and a collection of nutty cons at Belle Reve prison join the super-secret, super-shady Task Force X as they are dropped off at the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.

The second film taking the inspiration from the Suicide Squad comics sees James Gunn behind the scenes, given full creative freedom to play with a bunch of B-list DC villains….and the end result is the biggest budgeted Troma films to date!

As with the first film, the set-up is that Waller once again puts together a team of criminals for a mission – this time to infiltrate a lab on a remote island Corto Maltese and steal or destroy the weapon being developed there.  The film kicks straight into gear from the start as Harley, Rick Flag, and Captain Boomerang head up a rough-shod band of villains make a landing on the island.  The line-up this time is massive, with Idris Elba as Bloodsport, John Cena as Peacemaker, Michael Rooker as Savant, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK,King Shark (voiced by Stallone), David Mastalcian as Polka Dot Man and more….but as Gunn has repeatedly said…don’t get too attached to them all.  From the opening assault, the film sets its stall out on the action, comedy, and bloody violence front.  The last film scored a 15 rating in the UK purely for the thematic nature of having the audience root for villains – this time it not only earns the rating, but (much like Kick Ass) borders close to deserving a higher rating!  This is James Gunn being as James Gunn as he is allowed to be – and clearly having fun doing so.

The aforementioned cast are also appearing to have fun, Robbie is now so comfortable in the Harley role that I’m not sure where the actress ends and the character begins.  But it is the new additions that get a chance to really shine here – Elba’s Bloodsport battles for leadership with John Cena’s similarly ability based Peacemaker.  Their ego stoking battles adding some fun (but also some uncertainty) to the team – especially with a raid on a jungle camp which sees the pair trying to outdo each other.  Bloodsport may scowl a lot, but Elba is clearly enjoying every moment here.  Cena himself is a standout – he has demonstrated an average presence on screen so far, but in this he more than justifies having a whole series for Peacemaker (coming to HBO Max soon).  But the two standout stars are Mastalchian as Polka Dot and Melchior as Ratcatcher.  The pair steal the heart of the film – yeah, King Shark is getting all the buzz online (and deservedly so), but he’s just there for laughs.

Immense fun to be had, although sometimes it feels a little forced with the jokes, and the film also seems to focus on Harley too much at one point in a sub-story that added nothing (but was still fun), but by the time Starro goes on a rampage, all the fumblings are forgotten in a spectacularly silly and terrifying final act.

Not a comic-book movie, but a pure movie comic book – the film is styled in a very comic book manner, with chapter titles formed from scenery – a technique often used on 1 or 2 page panel intros in comic books.
