I first saw this last year, and was underwhelmed by the preposterous nature of it, but (as I tend to do) I decided to give it a revisit now it finally arrived in the UK on Amazon Prime, and with the knowledge of how silly it all gets I had a lot more fun this time.

Chloe Grace Garret plays Flying Officer Maude Garret, tasked with delivering a top secret package from New Zealand to Samoa.  She finds herself on the Fools Errand bomber, the crew mostly derisive towards her, and she is told she has to sit the take-off in the Sperry Ball turret under the plane.   She soon finds she is trapped in there, and it appears that the bomber has other technical issues – which appear to be caused by the presence of a gremlin-like creature crawling around the plane.

Yes, this is a repacked Nightmare at 20,000 feet, expanded out and given a new approach, with some social commentary about equality thrown in for good measure, and from the start I was drawn in.  Moretz, who we are focussed on solely for most of the film, holds it together, and delivers a fiery performance.   The tension as she finds herself trapped in the turret – which begins to see damage – plays well, and the danger from enemy planes as well as the unknown gremlin make sure to never let go.

But then it gets a little silly – and at the point which the film sees Moretz climb out the turret and crawl upside-down around the plane to the wing is the point at which I tuned out on first viewing.  Stylistically, the manner in which the camera spins around so we see the scene upside down is, admittedly, smart in concept, but makes the whole crawl seem even more ridiculous as a result.   But, second viewing around, I knew this was coming, and went with it – and yes, it is still ridiculous, but it is fun.

Shadow in The Cloud is engaging, disposable nonsense with a few great thrills, and a standout performance by Moretz.  Well worth checking out.
