Plot: A musical odyssey through five weird and wonderful decades with Ron and Russell Mael celebrating the inspiring legacy of Sparks.

When I read that this documentary was about the hugely influential, enigmatic band that not many people remember, I was initially confused – they are still making music, surely people know who they are?  But, as I swiftly found at work, apparently not many people do!  “Is this a spoof documentary like Spinal Tap?” was one question put to me.  “Never heard of them!” another posited, despite the fact my playlists in the foyer have a selection of their tracks mixed in.  “Surely you know This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us?” I asked, to blank expressions and shakes of the head!

Then, I realised that despite loving their music – with it’s ever evolving nature, and a very anti-norm attitude – I knew little about Ron and Russell themselves!  Within the first few minutes, I realised how little I actually knew….they aren’t British????

The Sparks Brothers, directed by Edgar Wright, is a fascinating journey into the career of the two very secretive (up until now) artists who have releases over twenty albums across since 1971, and who many synth pop and alternative bands cite as their biggest influence, from Sex Pistols, to Depeche Mode, Duran Duran, Erasure, and Bjork.  Even Kurt Kobain referenced Sparks in crafting some of the pieces for Bleach by Nirvana….and yet they are so unknown.  But, importantly, you don’t have to be a fan to follow and enjoy the documentary, which approaches their look at their lives as though you know nothing about them – indeed, the film itself refers to them as your favourite band’s favourite band – signifying that you may never have heard of them, but the music you love was inspired by them, so check this out…

At 140 minutes, you may think that the film is a tad long, but the time flew by, and by the end I was slightly wiser as to who they were, and discovered that there is a chunk of their music that I’ve still yet to explore.  A fascinating, sometimes witty look at the lives of two musicians who make music for themselves, and have only sold out kind of once – ironically.
