Skull Island is at the mercy of a violent storm, and the enclosure that Kong has been kept in there can’t last forever. So when an opportunity to move Kong to help locate the entrance to the the hollow earth arises, it is taken. However, once off Skull Island, Kong is locatable by Godzilla, who appears to seek him out to reign supreme as king of the monsters. But recently Godzilla has also been seemingly randomly attacking coastal areas….and what is the Apex corporation working on in secret.
This is pure B-movie ploitting, with cliched characters, and nonsense exposition – but it is a film about a giant lizard and a big monkey having a fist fight….what were you expecting?
Adam Wingard directing is clearly having fun with a big budget – he is usually given smaller properties, with low budget horror like VHS, Blair Witch, and his last outing was 2017’s Death Note – a very misunderstood film that I actually embraced. Here he gets to smash some iconic characters together – and allows fans of either monster to relish the representation of their choice.

But, you know what, who cares? The earlier films of both creature gave us more human element as we were introduced to these magnificent beasts – now we just want the creatures.
Visually superb is how the fights can be described – the trailer showed us some of the aircraft carrier smackdown, but the whole sequence is much more. Hollow earth is represented in an interesting manner, with a gravity shift mid point that gives it a bizarre unreality. The Hong Kong fight is devastation city, and possibly the one area where the human factor (or lack of it) is slightly problematic – we see glimpses of people in nearby skyscrapers – but then pretty much the entire area gets toppled with no seeming regard for the lives clearly snuffed out – we are too busy whooping with joy at the fight. If you though Man of Steel had a casual disregard for the devastation in the final act, this film asks you to hold its beer…
But, didn’t the classic Godzilla films do just this also as the man in the costume stomped on models?
In the end, if you are here looking for deep philosophical musings, scientific accuracy, and character drama…you are in the wrong place. B movie with a budget that does exactly what it promises!
