Now, let me just be a tad pedantic here and highlight that I’m actually one of those annoying folk who, when people talk about the new decade, retorts with, “Well, as there was actually no year zero, the new decade doesn’t start until the end of 2020!” That is predominately why I’ve not been following the trend of compiling lists of the top films of the decade etc.

Well, that and the fact that why would I do a list when I can make a whole topic about it? So, as we roll over into a new (almost) decade, let’s take a look back at each year from 2010 to 2019 at the highlights on film of each year. It’s all positive this week – no bad thoughts (we are entering a year with enough misery ahead of us as it is, we need cheering up).

So, join us at 8pm UK time this coming Sunday 5th January as we spend a delightful 90 minutes or so working through these questions…

Q1: 2010 isn’t just a sequel to Kubrick’s sci-fi classic, but also saw a plethora of 3D films following in the wake of Avatar the previous year.  But what were the film highlights of that year for you, and which actors/directors delivered the best?  #MTOS

Q2: 2011 will be known as the year that spawned #MTOS, and once more let’s give thanks to @raghavmodi & @askimrach for giving life to Sunday evenings.
But, aside from that, which films and stars stood out for you and deserve a shoutout? #MTOS

Q3: 2012 was a rather average Roland Emmerich film, but thankfully we lived through it and survived.  Now, what film related events shook your world in the year 2012?  #MTOS

Q4: In 2013 the world lost the much respected critic Roger Ebert.  Surely that year would have seen him lavishing praise on one or two films of note.  So, which films, and stars, do you think stood out in 2013? #MTOS

Q5: In 2014, Scotland chose to remain a part of the UK via a referendum.  Whilst that was going on, what films were you choosing to watch to take your mind off it all, and what celebrities were garnering your attention? #MTOS

Q6: 2015 was the International Year Of Light, so what films were lighting up the screen in a big way for you that year, and what names were foremost in the spotlight of your mind?  #MTOS

Q7: Look, can we just not get onto talking about the news from 2016 please?  The deaths that year almost broke me.  (And that’s ignoring politics of the year.)
So, cheer me up with some films and actors who shone that year, please. #MTOS

Q8: On a personal level, 2017 was a time of great change as I left a toxic workplace after 16 years, taking a sweet redundancy package with me.  I found pleasure in films at another cinema (which I now work for).
But what films were the hot picks for the year, and what actors/directors were noteworthy? #MTOS

Q9: Streaming services started making a big impact in 2018, as Roma landed, and was in the hot spot for awards as a result.

Was it deserving of the attention, or were there better releases that year, and better crews behind those films? #MTOS

(Oh, yeah, I brought this back too that year)

Q10: And so we get to last year – which we did cover last week, but there’s always room for more reflection.  So, films, actors, directors, anything film related you further wish to pay respects to from 2019?  #MTOS
