#MTOS: We Need To Talk About Kevin

#MTOS: We Need To Talk About Kevin post thumbnail image

Snootchie Bootchies! This one has been on the backburner for a while now, and is one I’ve been quite looking forward to posting. You see, I am a bit of a fan of Kevin Smith, even though there’s a chunk of his work that I am not enamoured with, and occasionally find his ramblings online unnecessary and self indulgent (yes, Kev, we get you love your wife – I love my wife too – but we don’t need THAT much detail divulged!)

Love him or hate him, it is hard to ignore him. Even though his films are, at best, moderate successes (and at worst total bombs), Smith himself is so well known outside of the cult-fan circles due to his involvement in so many things, and even via cameo appearances in other releases (for good or bad). It is safe to say that even if you have never seen one of his films, most people will at least know who he is.

So, this week, let’s take a look at Kevin Smith, and pull apart what works and what doesn’t in his films, and also discuss whether this upcoming Askewniverse revisit in J&SB Reboot is a positive direction, or a desperate attempt to be relevant on film again.

Join me at 8pm UK time on Twitter this Sunday 19th July to join in the Q&A.

Q1:  Kevin Smith made quite an impact in the movie world over the first decade of his career.  Which film was your first foray into his works, and are you a fan? #MTOS

Q2: Out of all his films, which would you say is the one you enjoy the most?  What about that film do you enjoy? #MTOS

Q3: Which of his films do you feel is the weakest of his output?  What doesn’t work? #MTOS

Q4: A few actors crop up multiple times over his films (especially his Askewniverse ones) – which of his most frequent collaborators shone the most and why? #MTOS

Q5: Taking regulars out the equation, which stars popped up once in a Smith film and stole their scenes the best? #MTOS

Q6: Outside his Askewniverse (aka Jay & Silent Bob era) of films, Smith has branched out into a variety of films and styles.  What has he done well, and what did he miss the mark with? #MTOS

Q7: Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back was extremely meta with references to the industry.  The reboot in production looks to go meta on that meta aspect!  Is this too much – should he retire J&SB for good? #MTOS

Q8: Outside of film making, Smith crops up everywhere from podcasts to documentaries to comics and to TV.  Which are you aware of and which have you seen?  Should he stick to films? #MTOS

Q9: His scripts are known for being packed with some zingers of lines (and some crass ones).  Favourite moments of dialogue from his films….go! #MTOS

Q10: Smith has been hinted at wanting to direct comic-book movies at some point.  Would you like him to be given a chance, and which character would you like to see him tackle? #MTOS
