Motor sports have a huge following, and some races are so legendary and ingrained on our collective psyches that even non-fans of the races know about them. Take the Monaco Grand Prix for example – an iconic track deep in the heart of the beautiful coastal resort. Or Le Mans 24 – an endurance race of legend. Then we have the Indy 500 – a 500 mile speedway race which takes place at the end of May each year. In fact, it takes place this Sunday, which is the reason I have it as a topic (it was a challenge to see if I could craft a theme around it).

Now, sadly the films of the Indy are few and far between, but the names associated with, and the impact the race has on popular culture opened up a lot of avenues for general film related questions tied into the event (with a small diversion to other motor-sports towards the end). So, fan of racing or not, there should be enough in here to get the tweets flowing this Sunday evening.

Q1: Whilst there have been films set around the Indy 500, they fell out of favour in the late 60s.  Are there any that spring to mind that you recall seeing, and would recommend others check out? #MTOS

Q2: Some icons of the screen appeared in those early films, such as racing and screen legend Paul Newman in ‘Winning’.  Over his career, what would you say are his most iconic roles and why? #MTOS

Q3: One of the earliest Indy related films was also a very early outing for Jimmy Stewart, another icon of the big screen.  Which three films do you most identify him with, and are there any small gems you feel get overlooked? #MTOS

Q4: The most recent movie to feature a dream of winning Nascar was the animated adventure, Turbo from Dreamworks.  Was it a podium finish for the studio, or should it have remained in the pits?  Where does it rank amongst their other output?  #MTOS

Q5: Speed Racer in 2008 gave a nod to the Indy with the winner drinking from a bottle of milk.  Was the Wachowski’s hyper-racing film as bad as the box office figures suggested?  Do you feel they get a bad rap undeservingly these days? #MTOS

Q6: Apocalypse Now and Platoon both had lines of dialogue referencing the Indy 500.  Both were set during the Vietnam war, and are both well respected.  Are there any Vietnam set films that you feel are unfairly overlooked? #MTOS

Q7: It seems that as the Indy fell out of popularity in films, Nascar took over.  Why do you think this happened, and which Nascar focussed films do you rate highly? #MTOS

Q8: Motor racing in all its guises has been the focus of a plethora of documentaries over the years.  Which have you seen, and would recommend to others to watch – even if they are not enthused by the sport? #MTOS

Q9: In the realm of fiction, racing has been prominent on the screen over the years.  Which films do you…ahem….race back to over again, savouring each lap of viewing? #MTOS

Q10: Okay, fantasy casting time.  If they were going to make a new Indy 500 set film, who would you like to direct it and star in it, and why? #MTOS
