#MTOS: Mum’s The Word

The idea for this week’s topic actually came around half way through last week’s session, and despite me already having a good 5 or 6 topics almost ready to go with, it just seemed right to run this one. Why? Well, as the UK folk will know, Sunday 31st March is Mother’s Day for the UK, so it just makes complete sense to run a topic on the theme of mothers.

But, what approach to take? That was the dilemma! I mean, mothers have been the focus of horrors, but we don’t want to cover horror in depth at this time of year (we have October for that). Well, comedies then? Or musicals? What about picking an on-screen iconic mother and dedicating a round to that actress? You get the drift. There were many options available.

So, I did what any normal person would do – I used them all! Yup, each of the questions this week focuses on a different genre, all linked (some tenuously) to the joys of parenthood and mother/child relationships. The advantage of the variety is that everyone should be able to get involved (specific genre focused topics always alienate non-fans of those genres).

So, let’s all gather around Twitter this coming Sunday as we talk about mothers on film.

Q1: Let’s go back to where it all begins – the miracle of childbirth!  Because without a pregnancy, there can’t be a mum…or can there?  Which films revolving around the joy of pregnancy and childbirth are amongst your favourites? #MTOS

Q2: On-screen mums tend to have a hard time, and it is no wonder that some of them go a little crazy sometimes.  Which horror films which involve a mother do you love, and are there any hidden gems of the genre that you feel not enough people have seen?  #MTOS

Q3: In order to avoid going off the precipice of insanity, some mums get some help by way of a nanny or babysitter.  Top three films involving either of the two (any genre). #MTOS

Q4: Broken homes, fractured families, and the Dad goes and re-marries, paving the way for the step-mom to take over.  As many fairy tales have told us, these are usually evil step-moms.  So, which classic fairy tale step-mom do you rate the nastiest? #MTOS

Q5: Many of the step-moms mentioned previously would also be queens.  So, that provides a tenuous link to films about (or containing) royalty, factual or fictional.  Which female royal focussed films would you recommend to folk? #MTOS

Q6: Okay, let’s relax – not all mother-based films are horrors or sad tales.  In fact, frustrated moms form the basis of many a comedy.  Which comedies about the frustrations of parenthood do you rate the highest and why? #MTOS

Q7: My mother has a strange knack of breaking into song at pretty much any occasion (a trait I’ve inherited).  So, that brings us to musicals (which I could have just linked to Mamma Mia now I think about it).  Favourite musicals, and why? #MTOS

Q8: We can’t cover this topic without mentioning The Mummy.  Covered many times on screen, from classic horror to modern action.  What is your favourite portrayal on screen of the walking body in bandages? #MTOS

Q9: So, aside from the specific genre examples we’ve already explored, are there any other on-screen mums that you feel are iconic?  What makes them such strong examples? #MTOS

Q10: Let’s finish by casting your mind back to your childhood.  What films did your parents gravitate towards a lot, and did you take a shine to those films yourself, or have you carved a totally different taste in entertainment to your parents? #MTOS
