Plot: Batman and Robin of the 1960s live action series are back in action to take down their fiendish foes united once more against them.

For people of a certain age, the answer to, “Who is the best Batman?” will always be, “Adam West!”  The 60s TV series and film was many a kids entry into the world of the Caped Crusader and his Boy Wonder, and repeated syndication through the decades ensured that kids of the 70s and 80s had a chance to discover the show too.  Even the 90s saw it gain a new audience as it was aired as a cult, cheesy classic show.  Yes, we know that this version of Batman was jokey and farcical at times, but that was part of the charm.  A stellar cast in the roles of the villains certainly helped, and there is an endearing charm to the whole affair which makes it accessible to all ages even today.  So, when news came that an animated movie based on the show was on the way, you can guarantee that I was excited.  Adam West and Burt Ward would return to voice their characters again, as would Julie ‘Catwoman’ Newmar.  Reassurances that it would be just like the show were welcomed, but has too much time passed?  Are we now so enamoured with tales of The Dark Knight that a lighter Batman is no longer welcome?

The plot sees the usual mob of miscreant minds, Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman, causing some mayhem once more, luring Batman and Robin into a trap.  There Catwoman tries to control Batman, but seems to fail – but over time it seems Bruce isn’t his normal self, and he starts to become darker, with plans to take over Gotham…

The result is an animated film that is sumptuous to view, and should have been a kitschy little reminder of times gone by, but instead is much, much more!  Scattered references to Batman history of the past few decades offer a meta level of self awareness that makes the film so much more.  There are lines of dialogue from the Tim Burton era, references to moments from Nolan’s era, and even a few nods to Schumacher’s films.  Instead of being a return to the 60s style, it is a celebration of all things Batman, whilst also giving Adam West another chance to show why he was so iconic.  The animation is simple but elegant, and the inclusion of the fight scene tags (Pow, Whammy, Kersplutch, etc) is an utter joy, all making you wonder why they never did this before, all those years ago when the show got cancelled because someone broke the sets!

Who is this film aimed at?  Well, quite obviously the primary target is those who recall the fun of the old show and film.  All the crazy gadgets (all labelled with ‘Bat-‘ in front of them) and insane plotlines are present and correct.  But it also appeals to the younger audiences who may have never seen any of the old shows – I know this for a fact as my daughter sat transfixed watching the whole thing with me, and enjoyed it right down to the closing credits Bat-Dance.   Holy cross-generational appeal!

This has been long awaited, and the news that a second film is planned for next year is welcomed.  Welcome back Batman and Robin, we’ve missed your simple charm.
