Daniel Radcliffe can tend to be a little dull and bland in most films, which can make it offputting when you see his name attached to a film.  However, over recent years he’s been working on changing his image somewhat – a tricky thing to manage given the popularity of Harry Potter.  He’s played Ginsberg in Kill Your Darlings, a horned guy with demonic powers in Horns, and recently a corpse in Swiss Army Man.  In Imperium he plays the role of an FBI agent, Nate Foster, who is sent undercover to investigate some white supremacy groups who it is suspected are building a bomb.  As his investigation progresses, he encounters the many varied facets of the groups, from the conspiracy theorists, the thugs, the public speakers, and the quiet followers.  In addition he also finds himself getting close to some of them, especially Gerry Conway (True Blood’s Sam Trammell) and his family.

Following in the footsteps of other films which have broached similar topics, such as 1998’s American History X, Imperium is a very apt film for our current political climate, and handles the subject matter without demonising the characters.  It would be easy to have all the members of the various organisations portrayed as pure neo-nazi thugs, but instead the film portrays them as a varied bunch, many who are just disillusioned by society, and misinformed on their ideas.  As we follow Radcliffe’s agent deeper into the darker edges of white supremacy, the tension builds, and some deeply unsettling moments play out.  By the end of the film there is a lot of food for thought about the subject matter.

Imperium is a tense thriller, showcasing how Radcliffe, when working with a strong director, can really deliver, and his slow transformation from a desk-bound young agent to a serious field agent is convincing.  Toni Collette adds support as the senior agent that Radcliffe reports to, Angela Zamparo, who is desperate to prove that the threat of a bomb is real despite pressure from her bosses to close it down.

On a very limited release before it receives a home release, Imperium is one of the highlights of the year, and well worth checking out.
